Phonics at St Vincents
The teaching of phonics is a key focus at St Vincent’s as it enables us to develop confident, early readers and writers. We have recently taken on the 'Little Wandle Letters and Sounds' Phonics Scheme including the supporting Collins reading books for Reception and Year 1. In the documents section below, you will find a Phonic Progression Document that explains the teaching order of the sounds. You will also find sound mats that we will be using with the children.
How do we teach phonics?
Using Little Wandle, we ensure that all children in our Reception and Year 1 classes are taught phonic skills through a daily 20-30 minute discrete lesson. They will also read books linked to their reading ability at least 3 times a week. This develops the child's ability to tackle unknown words within a text by blending the phonemes (sounds) within the word. These phonic skills also enable a child to work out the phonemes they will need to use when they are writing words.
Further support for parents
Parents can use this link https://www.littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk/resources/for-parents/ to access information about our scheme. It includes very useful documents and videos that explain how Phonics is taught, how the sounds are pronounced, and tips for reading at home.
We are in the early stages of implementing this scheme and hope to add more information and useful resources as our training continues.
