Autumn

Current pick-up/drop-off arrangements and timings for Year 5:

8:50: Drop off at Key Stage 2 door (opposite Y4 classroom)

3:15 Pick up in the same place as drop-off. Children who have permission to walk home will be escorted/dircted into the one-way system to leave the school grounds. If you would like your child to be able to walk home, please ensure you have emailed the school office with written permission.

PLEASE TRY TO STICK AS CLOSELY AS POSSIBLE TO THESE TIMINGS IN ORDER TO HELP US TO KEEP THE BUBBLES OF CHILDREN SEPARATE AND SAFE, AND TO AVOID LARGE GROUPS OF PARENTS CONGREGATING ON THE PLAYGROUND.

Thank you!

Class Worship

Class worship takes place every Friday morning and is a wonderful time to reflect on the week and listen to the Word of God.  This is especially important as, at present, we can not come together as a whole school to worship.  This week we reflected about the importance of friendship.  We thought about Jesus and his apostles and the very special relationship they had.  We reflected on how we could act as Jesus did and think about our actions and words towards our friends.

R.E.

The children have already shown their maturity by discussing difficult themes in R.E.  We had a wonderful debate about why the serpent went to Eve first rather than Adam to tempt her to eat from The Tree of Knowledge and who could really have been to blame for The Fall!

Reading

For this term we are unable to allow children to take reading books home.  Therefore, each child will read daily in class using a book from our class library.  We also ask that they continue to read a little every day at home.  We have sent out a suggested reading list but it is perfectly fine if your child wishes to read something else of their choice.  Please do remember to email their book reviews to us so we can keep a record of how much they are reading at home.

Science

Our first topic of the year in Science is Earth and Space. We have been thinking about what we already know about this topic and we have been very impressed by the background knowledge of our class members. We have begun by thinking about why we have night and day and the relationship between the earth and the sun and we will continue our learning by investigating the moon and the planets.

Music

Our topic is all about classic rock anthems and we have already begun to sing and perform Bon Jovi's hit, Living on a prayer. Year 5 are building on their knowledge of playing the glockenspiel to develop improvisations to accompany the song. There have definitely been some excellent air guitar performances!

Geography

This term the children are learning all about atlas and map reading skills and they will all have the opportunity to practise practical skills, such as using a compass, when working with Miss Hughes during outdoor learning.

Forest School

Following an excellent morning of Forest School work, we have learned how to make a bow and arrow using a clove hitch, how to make vegetable stew over an open fire using only a sheet of tin foil, and we have made bread twists which were delicious!  We got very muddy but we all had a fantastic time.
